Syria: Ex Daraa MP flees to Jordan with 38 relatives

27 August, 15:17

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, AUGUST 27 - A former Syrian MP and tribal chief of the southern Daraa region has reached Jordan in the past few hours with 38 members of his extended family, authorities in Amman have confirmed.

Authorities also said that shaykh Nasser b. Muhammad Khayr al Hariri crossed a barbed wired barrier along the Syrian-Jordanian border to defect to Jordan.

Al Hariri stepped down as MP on April 22 last year, just a month after the beginning of a bloody crackdown by government troops and police on peaceful demonstrators in Daraa, the birthplace of the tribal leader. (ANSAmed)
