(ANSAmed) - ROME -  About 1,000 immigrants have
reached Italy's coasts in the last two weeks, Italian Interior
Minister Annamaria Cancellieri said on Tuesday.
The majority of the immigrants came by boat from Libya,
although they are not necessarily Libyan nationals.
Many come from sub-Saharan countries or the Horn of
Africa, and probably have the right to international protection,
Cancellieri told the Senatés Human Rights Commission.
"This situation should make us reflect on the epochal
phenomenon whose management requires ongoing commitment by the
government and institutions," she added.
