Protest on Saturday Dec. 1 during COP 18

(ANSAmed) - Doha, November 28 - Thousands of activists from around the world will demonstrate on Saturday, December 1, in Doha to demand concrete action to protect the environment during negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP18) ongoing in the capital, in the first such demonstration in Qatar's history.

Organized by several NGOS, the demonstration will take place along the Corniche, Doha's main bay, with the participation of thousands of activists from 15 Arab countries including the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Oman, Egypt, Bahrain and Libya to demand the reduction of CO2 emissions by 2020.

COP18 President, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, had called on the NGOs to demonstrate. Greenpeace had initially said it would not demonstrate due to logistical problems as it had not succeeded in organizing a protest with a sufficiently high impact and low costs. Observers however believe many NGOS decided not to protest so as not to endanger their members in a non democratic country. (ANSAmed)
