17 January, 17:52

(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, JANUARY 17 - A delegation from the European Council's Committee for the Prevention of Torture (ECPT) on Thursday afternoon reached the Turkish island prison of Imrali to check on incarcerated Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) founding member Abdullah Ocalan, Hurriyet daily online reported.

The ECPT can at any time send inspectors to places of detention in Council of Europe member states to verify that prisoners are not being tortured or otherwise mistreated.

Today's visit was previously announced to Bursa city prosecutors, who oversee the island prison in the Sea of Marmara.

Ocalan, who since 1999 has been serving a death sentence commuted to life in prison, has for the past few weeks been in talks with the Turkish government for a political solution to the conflict in Turkish Kurdistan. (ANSAmed).
