Egypt: Catholic spokesman: forty churches raided, burned

Pope's speech heard by all, but road to reconciliation difficult

16 August, 14:09

(ANSAmed) - VATICAN CITY, AUGUST 16 - ''There were a lot of Muslim Brotherhood demonstrations last night. There was violence not only against churches, but also against institutions. They torched, raided, or razed to the ground 40 churches, of which 30 were Orthodox, Protestant and Greek-Orthodox and the rest were Catholic, and they set fire to police stations,'' a spokesman for Egyptian Catholic bishops, Father Rafic Greiche, told Vatican Radio on Friday.

''As soon as the Pope finished his Angelus speech, Catholics, Orthodox and even Muslims posted his words everywhere: on newspapers, on websites, as though they had all been waiting to hear what he had to say. The Catholics especially felt that the pope is standing by them, that he is praying for them and trying to transmit hope to them, which is what we truly need right now.'' Asked how reconciliation will be possible after so much violence, the Catholic spokesman said: ''I am so very sorry to say that it won't be easy, because the Muslim Brotherhood like all the Muslim parties are making no effort to seek a political solution. The people want a peaceful Egypt, while one small group is spreading violence and terror in the smallest villages of Upper Egypt.''(ANSAmed).
