(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, OCTOBER 25 - A group of Salafists and
police early on Friday engaged in a firefight near a high school
in the Tunisian capital, causing panic among students, sources
said.
The Salafists had approached the police aboard a jeep outside Ennasr High School, trying to seize their weapons. When police reacted they fled, but their jeep was cut off by a broken-down bus.
Police killed one militant and captured the rest, whose identities have not yet been disclosed.
A Western man sporting a blonde beard dyed dark with henna was among the captured suspects, police sources said. There are no reported injuries so far.
Police also found a Molotov cocktail and explosives on the jeep.
The offices of ruling Islamic party Ennahda in the northwestern governorate of Beja were torched last night after the funeral of Mohamed Toujani, a police officer who was gunned down in an attack by a dozen Salafist militias in the northern town of Menzel Bourguiba on Wednesday. At least four Ennahda members reported burning injuries in the arson attack carried out by hundreds of shouting people after the funeral, according to local radio reports.
