Spain: ninth day of strike, Madrid under garbage

PP to mayor Botella, urgent measures to stop emergency

13 November, 13:45

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, NOVEMBER 13 - Madrid is submerged by garbage on the ninth day of a strike called by garbage collectors following the announcement of thousands of layoffs by garbage cleaning firms. The Partido Popular has asked Mayor Ana Botella, from the same conservative party, to end the emergency.

The PP economics spokesman in Congress, Vicente Martinez-Pujalte, called on the city 'to put pressure' on companies managing street cleaning - Valoriza, Hol and Fcc - to adopt the 'necessary measures' to find an agreement with workers, who have been on strike since last Tuesday.

Pujalte told reporters that it was 'deplorable' for Madrid's streets to be clogged by garbage and called on both sides to be responsible and reach an agreement.

Meanwhile police identified 211 people, arrested 16 and reported another 27 charged with vandalism against garbage cans and of setting them on fire. Eight cars and six cleaning vehicles have been destroyed. (ANSAmed)
