(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT - Part of a mosaic of the centrally-located Umayyad mosque in Damascus was damaged by a mortar Wednesday, ANSA was told by a group of Syrian archeologists monitoring harm to the cultural heritage of the country at war. This is the first time since the beginning of the war in Syria that the eighth-century Great Mosque of Damascus has been damaged.

The sources say that part of a mosaic decorating the transept of the prayer room has been damaged. Photos posted on the archeologists' website show that the mortar, shot by rebel forces, hit part of the southern wall facing onto the internal courtyard (ANSAmed).
