(ANSAmed) - ATHENS, JULY 21 - Between June 23 and July 12,
2015, a total 28,260 illegal immigrants disembarked on Greek
islands in the Aegean Sea, GreekReporter website write quoting
an OnAlert article claiming that 4,266 new immigrants arrived at
various Greek islands over the past weekend alone. It stated
that the Greek Navy has spent five million euros due to its
increased efforts to find boats that are smuggling illegal
immigrants and its success rate has increased by 40%. Sources
within the Navy said that frustration with Europe's indifference
to the situation is growing. Despite the Navy's increased
effectiveness, their mission is still challenging because at the
sight of authorities, immigrant smugglers throw the immigrants
into the sea. A United Nations report released in late June had
found that between January and the end of June, Greece had the
most seaborne immigrants and refugees out of all the European
countries. (ANSAmed).
