42,974 Med migrant arrivals in 2017, 962 deaths - IOM

85% of arrivals to Italy, most from Guinea, Nigeria, Bangladesh

    GENEVA - Some 42.974 migrants and refugees have arrived by sea in Europe since the start of the year and 962 have died on the way, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said Friday. The data, released in Geneva, was updated till April 19.

    Some 85% of the arrivals were registered in Italy (36,703) and the highest number of deaths, 898, was seen on the central Mediterranean route. Italy bears the brunt of migrants arriving by sea from Libya.

    The spokesman for IOM in Italy was quoted in a statement as saying that the 36,703 arrivals since the start of 2017 exceed by over 10,000 the number of arrivals registered over the same period in 2015 and 2016.

    Most of those who reached Italy in 2017 hailed from Guinea, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Ivory Coast, IOM said.
