(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, JULY 7 - The death toll of soldiers killed in the terrorist attack on Egyptian military forces in the Sinai on Friday has reached 23, according to a security source.

In addition, 33 soldiers were wounded, some in serious condition, and the toll is feared to increase.

Forty Islamic terrorists were killed in the conflict.

Friday's attack on Egyptian armed forces in the Sinai is the deadliest in recent months and likely worse than the January 2015 attack, when three coordinated attacks left 32 dead and 42 wounded in Arish.

The attack on Friday was also a structured operation: the site of government daily Al Ahram, in line with a statement from the Egyptian Army, indicated "six vehicles destroyed" and spoke of various car bombs.

ISIS is active in the Sinai through former "Ansar Beit el-Maqdes" members, the "Partisans of Jerusalem", the main Egyptian jihadist group based in the peninsula on the border with Gaza and renamed "State of Sinai" in an alliance-affiliation with the Islamic State announced in November 2014.(ANSAmed).
