Libya: male rape systematically used as weapon, report

Witnesses, for decades used to humiliate men by militias

(ANSAmed) - ROME, NOVEMBER 3 - Rival militias in Libya systematically use male rape as a war weapon, according to a report published by The Guardian newspaper, citing investigative work carried out by a Tunis-based group and a journalist from Le Monde.

Reports provided by victims and video footage showed men being sodomized with objects including broom sticks and rockets to humiliate them in the lawless, militia-dominated country.

Male rape is a taboo in Arab societies and victims usually do not rejoin military or public life after the abuse.

According to witnesses whose testimony was shared by Le Monde with the Guardian and a pool of newspapers including Italy's La Stampa, in many instances a victim was forced into a room with other prisoners who were ordered to rape him or be killed.

A witness identified as Ahmed, who said he was detained for four years in a prison in Tomina, near Misrata, said he was forced to sodomize himself with a broomstick in order to get food.

''They separate you to subjugate you'', he said. ''Subjugate the men, that's the expression that they use. So that you never hold your head up again. And they were filming everything with their phones''.
