UNHCR says 160 deaths in one week in Mediterranean

UN agency renews appeal for more resettlement

12 January, 20:02

GENEVA - About 160 migrants or refugees died or went missing this week alone in the Mediterranean in three separate incidents, the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR said in a statement on Friday.

It renewed its appeal to countries to open more places for resettlement and "other safe alternatives for the protection of refugees".

Last September, UNHCR launched an appeal for 40,000 places for refugee resettlement in 15 countries along the Mediterranean route, the statement said.

The UN agency has thus far received about 13,000 offers of places for 2018 and 2019.

The majority of these are part of global resettlement programmes already regularly instituted, and only some of the places are additional.
