On Evros River at Greek border, third victim was teacher

(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, FEBRUARY 14 - At least three bodies, including two children, were recovered in Turkey on Wednesday following the sinking of a rubber boat on the Evros River (Merin in Turkish), which forms the border with Greece, at sunrise on Tuesday, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The two child victims have not yet been identified, and it is still unclear whether they were Turkish citizens, but they were estimated to be around four and 12 years old.

The third body was that of a 37-year-old Turkish teacher, who was fired and banned from foreign travel for suspected ties to alleged coup mastermind Fethullah Gulen. The finding confirms, as in previous cases, that Turkish citizens who have been banned from travelling abroad as a result of post-coup purges are also among those attempting to flee illegally to EU countries.

According to rescue workers, a total of eight people were aboard the rubber boat, four of whom are still missing, with a fifth who allegedly managed to reach Greece.

Rescue operations were hampered by poor weather and low temperatures.(ANSAmed).
