BEIRUT - Several dozen civilians, including many sick, were evacuated from Eastern Ghouta on Tuesday, Syria Direct cited a leader of the rebel faction Jaysh al Islam as saying.

The source said the group had reached an agreement for the evacuation with Russia and the Syrian Red Crescent with the mediation of the UN. It is the first medical evacuation from the rebel-held enclave since February 18, when government forces intensified their attack.

Over 1,000 civilians have been killed and nearly 5,000 injured as a result, according to Doctors without Borders. On Tuesday morning UN sources in Syria said that "a mass evacuation" of civilians from Ghouta was expected during the course of the day. Roughly 400,000 civilians continue to live under siege in the region, according to the UN.
