Partly built by Italy. Europeans visit Bedouin community

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, MAY 16 - The EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah have appealed to Israel "to not proceed in demolitions" in the Bedouin community of Khan al Ahmar.

The community is where the so-called School of Tyres is located, southeast of Jerusalem towards the Dead Sea in the E-1 section of the Gaza Strip, which is under the administrative and military control of the Jewish state.

"Moving the community would be in contrast with Israeli obligations as the occupying power under international humanitarian law," said the Heads of Mission, who were visiting the area and meeting with Bedouin community leaders.

The European diplomats, among whom was also the Consul General of Italy in Jerusalem Fabio Sokolowicz, said they are "deeply concerned for the announced intention of the Israeli authorities to demolish Khan al Ahmar and force the relocation of the community".

About 170 children from five Bedouin communities attend the School of Tyres, whose construction was in part financed by Italy.

Israel said the reason it plans to knock down the school is because the structure doesn't have the requisite building permits. (ANSAmed).
