(ANSAmed) - ROME, MAY 16 - Ramadan, a holy month of daily fasting for all Muslims, begins on Thursday, May 17.

The Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy, known as the Great Mosque of Rome and led by its Secretary General Abdellah Redouane, announced the start of Ramadan in a statement.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar calendar and it will start in Italy on Thursday based on the lack of sighting of the new moon during the check conducted on Tuesday evening by the imam of the Great Mosque of Rome, Saleh Ramadan, as well as experts from the religious centre.

As it has in the past, this year the Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy will host a series of cultural and religious events for Ramadan, such as the evening prayer and the breaking of the fast following sunset.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries also announced that they will begin Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, on Thursday. (ANSAmed).
