12 Syrian loyalists killed in US-led coalition strike

Clashes resume along Iraqi border

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, MAY 24 - At least 12 loyalist soldiers and Iran-backed rebels were killed in an air strike carried out by the US-led coalition that is supporting Syrian Kurdish forces in eastern Syria on Thursday morning.

The National Observatory for Human Rights in Syria reported that the strike was launched just before dawn against an offensive front towards the eastern bank of the Euphrates river.

The report could not be confirmed by independent sources on the ground. On Wednesday evening Syrian loyalist forces, which also include Iran-backed rebels, had announced the launch of the battle to reclaim the area of the Euphrates still held by ISIS. Two weeks ago Syrian Kurdish forces backed by the US launched their own offensive on the eastern bank of the Euphrates against the last remaining pockets of resistance by ISIS on the border with Iraq.
