GENEVA - In the first 16 days of 2019, some 4,216 migrants and refugees entered Europe via sea, almost double the 2,365 that did so in the same period last year, the International Organization for Migration reports. The organization noted that there had been an increase in irregular flows especially for Spain, which is the destination of arrival for 80% of all arrivals across the Mediterranean. From January 13 to January 16 alone, 3,367 individuals arrived: almost double the 1,609 in the same period of 2018. IOM noted that, since the beginning of 2019, 83 migrants and refugees lost their lives in the Mediterranean in the attempt to reach Europe. The 83 deaths recorded on the three main Mediterranean routes from January 1 to January 16, instead, are fewer than the 199 in the same period of 2018.
