(ANSAmed) - MADRID, FEBRUARY 7 - The Mossos d'Esquadra Catalan police force has identified a 17-year-old Moroccan as the suspect in a string of rapes that had terrorised the Poble Sec neighbourhood of Barcelona in recent months and had set off protests by local feminist associations.

Following a complex investigation, police identified the youth, who was being hosted at a reception centre for foreign minors, as the aggressor in six rapes of women between the ages of 40 and 78.

The rapes took place in Montjuic, Poble Sec, and the area surrounding Vall d'Hebron, according to police sources cited by Catalan daily El Periodico.

The minor, whose identity has not been released, is currently being held under protection in the same Generalitat government centre where he was staying last summer from the time he arrived in Spain from Morocco.

Sources said he frequently escaped from the centre to commit the rapes, in which he allegedly managed to hide his face from his victims, who described him only as a heavyset young man of Arab origin.

Police were able to identify the minor through DNA evidence.
