SOHR denies recent Syrian regime chemical weapons use

US threatened to retaliate if news is confirmed

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, MAY 22 - The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has denied that the Syrian government had made use of chemical weapons in the past 48 hours in the northwestern part of the country. The organization, based in the UK, makes use of a large number of sources on the ground. The US has in recent hours threatened to retaliate again against the Syrian government if the reports of chemical weapons use were found to be true.

According to information received by the US, the Syrian government used chlorine gas against civilian areas in opposition-held areas of the northwestern province of Latakia.

The opposition groups include ones linked to al-Qaeda. The armed groups said that chemical weapons had been used in the area but the SOHR said that it had not received proof of these allegations. SOHR added that the mountain areas of Latakia where the chemical weapons were reportedly used are not thought to have any civilians in them. (ANSAmed).
