Migrants: 27,000 detained in Turkey in May, 10% at sea

Ankara: '561 suspected human traffickers arrested'

    (ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, JUNE 4 - A reported 27,536 migrants and refugees have been apprehended in May by Turkish authorities as they were trying to enter the country illegally or to cross the border with the European Union without regular documents, the Turkish interior ministry said. Nearly 10% (2,605 people) were intercepted at sea, mainly in the Aegean as they were attempting to reach the Greek islands, the ministry added. The majority of the people detained where Afghan, Pakistani and Syrian nationals.

    The ministry also said that over the same period a total of 561 suspected human traffickers were arrested. (ANSAmed).
