(ANSAmed) - PARIS, JULY 2 - UNESCO has taken Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, the site in the Palestinian territories considered the birthplace of Jesus, off of its list of world heritage in danger following restoration work.

In a statement, UNESCO said the nearby pilgrimage route was also removed from the list.

It said the decision was motivated by "the quality of work carried out on the church, in particular the restoration of the roof, the external facades, the mosaic murals and the doors of the basilica".

The Church of the Nativity, located about a dozen miles south of Jerusalem, was built in 339 and the building that substituted it after a fire in the 6th century conserves the remains of the original mosaic floor.

In 2012 it was added to the UNESCO world heritage list as well as the world heritage in danger list due to the deteriorated state of the church at that time.(ANSAmed).
