Slovenia stops 69 migrants in 24 hours at Croatian border

In six months, 5,345 illegal crossings, up on 2018 figures

    (ANSAmed) - LJUBLJANA, JULY 5 - Slovenian police have intercepted and arrested 69 migrants who were attempting to illegally cross into the country from the border with Croatia over the past 24 hours, said local media.

    The majority of those stopped, 48, were in the districts of Koper, Ilirska Bistrica, and Piran, and the majority of migrants were citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Kosovo, and Turkey.

    Only seven migrants said they intended to seek asylum with Slovenian authorities, while the others were brought back to Croatian authorities.

    Slovenian Interior Ministry data showed there were 5,345 illegal crossings in the first six months of 2019 at Slovenian borders, the majority from Croatia, compared to a total of 3,633 during the same period in 2018.(ANSAmed).
