Tornado and hailstorm kill six tourists in Greece

30 injured in northern Halkidiki peninsula

    (ANSAmed) - ATHENS, JULY 11 - Six foreign tourists were killed and at least 30 people were injured during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday when a tornado and violent hailstorm hit the northern Halkidiki peninsula in Greece, said local and international media.

    The tornado lasted 20 minutes, according to eyewitness accounts broadcast on Greek television ERT.

    "It was an unprecedented phenomenon, with very strong winds and strong hailstorms," said the head of the local civil protection, adding that a state of emergency has been declared in Halkidiki.

    More than 140 firefighters are working in rescue operations.
