TUNIS - Tunisian lawyers on Friday are protesting in courts across the country against the opening of a criminal investigation against the defense attorneys of the Committee for the defense of martyrs Belaid and Brahmi. This refers to the sit-in organized on September 20 by some 40 lawyers of the committee at the prosecutor's office which, according to the interior ministry, forced authorities to deploy security forces to restore order inside the building. The lawyers instead have denounced that they were attacked and beaten.
The slogan of the so-called 'Day of rage' will be ''no to the assault on lawyers, the right to defense is a fundamental guarantee for the independence of the judiciary''.
The lawyers' guild has announced that it will boycott and report to the Superior council of magistrates and the justice ministry the State attorney at the court of first-instance in Tunis, believing he is responsible for the situation. It also said that international and regional organizations will be informed, along with the UN special rapporteur on the independence of magistrates and lawyers, as well as the Commission for human rights of the ''attacks against lawyers and the violations of the rights for the defense''. It also categorically refused to ''invite lawyers at the center of judicial procedures for its commitment to the principle of immunity of lawyers in the exercise of their role''.
