Between 600 and 1,200 people cleared northeast of the capital

PARIS - A massive operation to evacuate two migrant camps on the northeastern outskirts of Paris took place at sunrise Thursday, clearing out between 600 and 1,200 migrants.

The authorities' stated objective was to change strategy in areas that have become "uncontrollable".

The operation began at 6 a.m. under a heavy rainfall between the Porte de la Chapelle and Saint-Denis, where Afghans and North Africans have camped for years, many with families and children.

A total of 600 police officers were mobilised for the evacuation, which took place the day after Interior Minister Christophe Castaner presented a new immigration plan.

The plan includes, among other things, launching a quota on economic migrants and placing tighter rules on public health assistance.
