Bishop calls Libya 'springboard for migrants to Europe'

'Not the cause of migration crisis'

(ANSAmed) - VATICAN CITY, FEBRUARY 13 - George Bugeja, Vicar Apostolic of Tripoli, spoke Thursday about the situation in Libya to the papal foundation Aid to the Church in Need.

''Achieving peace and reconciliation will not be easy. In Libya there are deep divisions and the parties in conflict are very distant from each other. It is difficult to even get them to sit at the same table,'' he said. Though he sees the recent Berlin Conference as having been a ''positive signal'', the bishop noted that the road head for the country is still long and that it is important that ''the various countries that took part in the meeting in the German capital keep their pledges''. He also noted that the ceasefire had been repeatedly violated in the past month and that the airport had repeatedly been opened and then closed agAin, but that at least schools and offices in the centre were open. He stressed that Libya is ''a springboard towards Europe, but not the cause of the migration crisis.''(ANSAmed).
