Complaints filed with attorney general to open investigation

21 February, 18:40

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, FEBRUARY 21 - Attorneys with the non-governmental organisation Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) filed two complaints with the Egyptian attorney general's office calling for investigations into an alleged report falsification and torture against Patrick George Zaki, the 27-year-old Egyptian activist and University of Bologna student currently incarcerated in Egypt accused of subversive propaganda on Facebook.

The first complaint is against the Mansura police station's investigative unit for "falsification of an arrest report" on February 8, "number 9944 of 2020", specified in a post Friday on the Facebook page of EIPR, the NGO where Zaki works as a researcher in gender studies.

A second complaint regards the fact (denied by the Egyptian judiciary) "that Patrick was beaten and subjected to electrical shocks before he was presented to the prosecutor", EIPR said.

It said the complaints were filed Monday and called for the attorney general to "open an urgent investigation".(ANSAmed).
