ISTANBUL - A number of mosques in Izmir, on the Aegean coast, have been playing Italian resistance song ''Bella Ciao'' as a call to prayer instead of the Adhan, creating surprise and a controversy in the country. The local version of the song ('Cav Bella') could be heard on the streets of Turkey's third-largest city as a call to prayer during the holy month of Ramadan amid a lockdown in the country due to the coronavirus emergency. Videos of the initiative went viral on social media, forcing authorities to intervene.

The provincial chapter of the Directorate for religious affairs denounced it as a form of sabotage and opened an internal investigation. Moreover, prosecutors in Izmir announced they were probing the initiative and posts regarding it that were shared on social media for ''offending religious values''.
