(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, JUNE 11 - The number of coronavirus victims in Israel has reached 300, while the number of new infections is on the rise, said the country's health ministry.

It said there were 106 confirmed cases in the past 24 hours.

The total number of cases has reached 18,461, with about 1,700 in the past two weeks, while there were less than 1,200 during the entire month of May.

The ministry attributed the majority of the new cases to schools that reopened in May after a two-month closure.

Last week the government decided against a total stop, preferring to intervene with individual closures in the face of outbreaks.

The education ministry said since schools reopened, there have been a total of 442 students and personnel infected with the virus, 144 schools closed and about 24,000 people placed in quarantine.(ANSAmed).
