Played a key role in Popular Front for Liberation

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, 02 MAR - An Israeli military court sentenced Palestinian MP Khalida Jarrar, 58, to two years in prison for having played a key role in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which Israel considers an illegal organisation.

Given the time in administrative detention that Jarrar has already served, she should be released in eight months, said Israeli daily Haaretz.

Jarrar was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006.

Since then she has spoken out in particular for women's rights and the rights of Palestinians detained in Israel. Her name attracted the attention of the Israeli secret services two years ago when a cell of the Popular Front carried out an attack in the West Bank in which a Jewish adolescent was killed and two relatives were injured.

However, during the investigation it emerged that Jarrar was not aware of preparations for that attack, Haaretz said.

The sentence, which was reached after a plea bargain, is therefore tied to other organisational activities she carried out for the Popular Front. (ANSAmed).
