(ANSAmed) - TRIESTE, 24 FEBRUAR - According to the recent report of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Italy, through the Central European Initiative (CEI) Fund at the EBRD, is amongst the major contributors to the Private Sector for Food Security Initiative.

Other donors include the EBRD's Shareholder Special Fund (SSF), the EU Neighbourhood Investment Facility (EU NIF), the SEMED multi-donor account (MDA), the Early Transition Countries (ETC) Fund, and the country of Luxembourg.

The Initiative, launched in November 2011 and led by the EBRD's Agribusiness Department and the Office of the Chief Economist, gives voice to private sector needs and facilitates its contribution in the process of setting priorities for global food security. The main priorities of the Initiative include facilitating access to finance, improving policy transparency, linking food exporters and importers, efficient use of resources, and capacity building for agribusiness. In this framework, the CEI Fund supported two technical cooperation projects targeting Ukraine, one of which provided training to grain farmers while the other focused on policy dialogue in the dairy sector.

Together with the EBRD, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and The World Bank, The CEI Fund at the EBRD also contributed to initiate EastAgri , a platform for sharing best practices between public and private sector institutions supporting agriculture and agribusiness in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus.
