Syria: Terzi, solution can only be political

Military evolution slow. Dutch minister, Assad should leave

07 January, 13:50

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JANUARY 7 - A response to the Syrian crisis 'can only be political', Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said on Monday after talks with his Dutch counterpart Frans Timmermans. Terzi said that 'the military evolution on the ground is not favourable to regime forces but could take a long time to be solved, as a consequence the word goes to diplomacy and in this respect the dialogue started between Washington, Moscow and the UN and arab League envoy is important'.

Terzi stressed that the speech of President Assad yesterday in Damascus in which he assured he would not leave power showed 'a total detachment from reality' and 'the will to ignore the terrible degradation' of his country where the victims are 'over 60,000'.

Timmermans expressed his country's position by explaining that for 'Assad there is no future in Syria' and recalled that in Marrakesh his government spoke 'in favour of a more important role of the coalition of Syria's opposition forces'. The president's speech yesterday 'showed that Assad doesn't want a political compromise'.(ANSAmed).
