24 June, 15:31

(ANSAmed) - ROME, JUNE 24 - In his speech on Monday morning at the Summit of the Two Shores of the Mediterranean being held in Marseille, Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi stressed the importance of the region.

''Firstly,'' he said, ''it is a place where different, complementary populations and culture meet and engage in exchanges, ones that have been in contact for millennia.

Secondly, as a great economic opportunity, since 20% of world trade transits through this area.'' The minister stressed the need to ''activate a development model that is sustainable and lasting, founded on collaboration between the nations on the shores of the Mediterranean. This requires strong political will to ensure peace and stability in the region, to invest in necessary infrastructure and interconnections, and to manage migration flows.'' ''On these bases,'' Moavero Milanesi concluded, ''we must work together, with loyal friendship, in order to pursue economic and job growth that rigorously ensures social growth and protects the environment and health. Italy is ready, thus, to push forward on the specific task that it was entrusted with as part of the Marseille summit: to safeguard the agrofood production chain, its quality, the circular and green economy, and consumer protection.''
