Election successor Pope Shenouda III expected in September

30 April, 15:46

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, APRIL 30 - So far, 14 Coptic bishops have presented themselves as candidates for the succession of Pope Shenouda III, the head of the Egyptian Coptic Church for more than 30 years who died on April 17. So said the legal advisor of the American Coptic Church, Maged Riad, in a press conference in Cairo. Riad specified that the election should be held in September.

The procedure for electing the new pope is long and complex.

It starts with the formation of a commission of more than a thousand people and ends when a name is drawn by a blindfolded child, deciding the final choice from three or four candidates.

The Egyptian Coptic community represents around one tenth of the more than 80 million Egyptians. The community has suffered several attacks, some of them very violent, in the past years.
