(ANSAmed) - MADRID - The Barcelona football team has taken a position in support of the Catalan culture and language. According to a statement released by the football club on its website, the decision was made in reaction to a draft law aiming to increase Spanish language instruction in the region.

Barcellona underscored that the Catalan language, like the club itself, is ''an element of integration that makes it possible to identify with Catalonia'', and that teaching the language in schools is of an ''identity-related'' nature. ''For this reason,'' the statement notes, ''Barcellona puts itself at the service of its country - as it has all throughout its history - to defend culture and identity.'' (ANSAmed).
