(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, FEBRUARY 11 - The ulema (Muslim legal scholars) council of Al-Azhar University on Monday elected the country's new Grand Mufti, who is the highest official of religious law in Sunni Muslim countries, and whose legal opinions and edicts are highly influential. In Egypt, the Grand Mufti had so far always been chosen by the president. Ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak nominated outgoing Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa in 2003.

His successor is Islamic Law Professor Shawki Ibrahim Allam, who teaches at Al-Azhar University in the Nile Delta city of Tanta. He was chosen out of three candidates. (ANSAmed).
