Spain: human chain for Catalonia independence referendum

300,000 expected to attend national celebration day 11/9

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, AUGUST 23 - A 400-km human chain reaching from northern to southern Catalonia will be formed to call for a referendum on the region's independence, on the initiative of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC).

The ANC - a platform of private citizens supporting national sovereignty for the region - is preparing to hold the event on September 11, Catalonia's national celebration day (the 'Diada'). This latest show of strength, after last year brought thousands into the streets to demand that consultations be started immediately for the independence of Catalonia, is to demand that an official commitment be made on September 12 to call a referendum, ANC chairwoman Carma Forcadell told the Catalan radio station RAC1. Forcadell noted that the 'road map' approved by the ANC aims to achieve a referendum on Catalonia's ''right to decide'' by May 31, 2014. She urged the Generalitat government to let the people decide. ''The current climate of uncertainty,'' she added, ''does not benefit anyone.''
