(ANSAmed) - ROME - The Expo 2015 must be the first in which women are the protagonists, Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said on Wednesday in the first meeting in Rome of the international board of the Women in Diplomacy (WiD) Committee, set up with the aim of promoting by 2015 the role of women in food safety and aid the foreign ministry in organizing congresses and workshops on a range of issues ahead of the Milan expo.

'It is the beginning of a dream that becomes reality', added Bonino, expressing the hope that the central role of women at Milan 2015 will serve for future events including the Dubai Expo in 2020.

The event at Villa Madama - where a dinner was served based on eco-friendly criteria including seasonality and low food cost - was attended by 1997 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jody Williams, Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 Spa and Italian government commissioner for Expo 2015, and Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge.

Another event will be taking place Thursday at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), called 'Women and Nutrition: ideas for a sustainable future', on the sidelines of a meeting to prepare for the II international conference on nutrition.

This will be an occasion to look into the issue of food safety and nutrition, focusing on women's role.

The aim of the project 'WE - Women for Expo' is to highlight ideas and solutions for a sustainable future, starting with the important role women can play in guaranteeing food safety and universal access to food.(ANSAmed).
