Politika, together with municipal vote in Belgrade

16 January, 12:47

(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, JANUARY 16 - Early political elections will be held in Serbia on March 16 together with a municipal vote in Belgrade, leading newspaper Politika reported on Thursday citing sources with the government coalition. The paper also said President Tomislav Nikolic will announce the vote on January 29, the last day in which he can call an early national election to make it coincide with the municipal vote in the capital.

The congress of the conservative Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is scheduled to take place on January 25. Leaders with the president's party, which has a relative majority in the government coalition, are expected to approve the early vote at the congress. SNS is Serbia's main party and recent surveys found 45% of would-be voters backed it, well ahead of the Democratic Party (DS) of ex-president Boris Tadic which garnered between 14 and 15% of backing from those polled.
