Libya: Tobruk gov't appoints Haftar top military commander

Control over Chiefs of Staff and defence ministry

25 February, 18:48

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, FEBRUARY 25 - General Khalifa Haftar has been appointed top commander of the Libyan army, armed forces spokesman Mohamed El-Hegazi reportedly announced on Wednesday. The position was created through an amendment to a law governing the Libyan army and will serve to ''supervise all the components'' of the armed forces, sources quoted an MP as saying. The position will have power over both the defense ministry and the Chiefs of Staff. The appointment is a confirmation of the increasing power wielded by General Haftar over the parliament and government in Tobruk, which is recognized by the international community.
