(ANSAmed) - FLORENCE - Italian Premier Matteo Renzi said Friday that the world needed a strong Europe and urged the EU to be more daring. "There's a great need for Europe in the world and Europe must be more daring," Renzi told the State of the Union conference at Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, calling on the participants to work to recover the true spirit of Europe. The premier also compared the EU to a "student of great talent who does not apply himself" complaining about relatively low growth rates and high unemployment levels. "The EU's margins of action are extraordinary, but we don't manage to take all the opportunities...
If "Italy ha returned to play a leading role in European debate, Europe must also regain a leading voice in world debate"said the premier, stressing that Italy has began to follow the promises it made not to Europe but to itself first and foremost.
"Italy - he added - is no longer the sick man of Europe".
Touching upon the issue of migrants, Renzi said the effect of the European extraordinary summit "will be visible in the next few weeks. I'm optimistic".
"Our country is proud of what it's doing and we will do everything we can to recover the bodies of those who died searching for freedom" he added, noting that the vessel aboard which hundreds of people found an untimely death was found in the Mediterranean yesterday.(ANSAmed).
