Renzi says suspending Schengen won't stop migrants

Premier set to meet Merkel in Berlin

01 July, 11:40

(ANSAmed) - BERLIN, JULY 1 - Premier Matteo Renzi said Wednesday that suspending the Schengen agreement will not stop asylum seekers arriving in Europe and could actually be counter productive. "It is no use closing Schengen to stop them entering," Renzi said in a speech on the future of Europe at Berlin's Humboldt University. "Paradoxically, at the most it will stop them getting out". Renzi is set to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on Wednesday. (ANSAmed).
