Women driving force for Med, at Barcelona conference

UfM conference brings women to the heart of regional politics

10 October, 20:04

ROME - The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is holding its third High-Level Conference on October 10 and 11 in Barcelona, titled "Women for the Mediterranean: Driving Force for Stability and Development", with the aim of bringing women to the center of regional politics and strengthening their role in the Mediterranean society, conference organisers said.

They said the conference aims to see women as change-makers and mediators capable of covering an essential role not only in the fight against extremism and radicalisation, but also in migration - where women are often victims of human trafficking, exploitation, violence and discrimination - to see them as promoters of integration and economic development in the countries of reception and of origin.

About 250 participants are attending the conference, including representatives from governments, international organisations, development agencies and the private sector. Among the participants are Jordanian Social Development Minister Wajih Azaizeh, Tunisian Minister for Family, Women and Children's Rights Neziha Labidi, and President of the National Council for Egyptian Women, Maya Morsy.

EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini sent a video message to the conference.

The Spanish delegate for gender violence illustrated Madrid's policies for combatting the phenomenon.

UfM Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi will give the conference's closing speech on Tuesday.
