Halting migrant flows 'impossible', Libyan ambassador

'More you invest in neighbors' futures, the safer you will be'

(ANSAmed) - ROME, MAY 24 - Libyan ambassador to Italy Ahmed Safar noted Wednesday that the one in every seven people are in movement according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and that thus ''no one can stop a phenomenon like that of migration''.

He was speaking at a roundtable discussion on migrants at the Libyan Academy of Rome held as part of Africa Day (May 25) celebrations.

However, he added, one can intervene to make it beneficial ''for the country of departure, the one that receives the migrants and for the migrants themselves''. ''The more you invest in your neighbours' futures,'' he added, ''the safer you will be.'' Greater investment is needed, he said, as well as a new narrative, since ''not all African migrants are headed towards Europe. They are also headed for (places like, Ed.) China and Saudi Arabia.''
