(ANSAmed) - BARCELONA, JULY 6 - Maltese President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Thursday visited the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean at its headquarters in Barcelona, highlighting the active role that Malta plays in the UfM framework.

The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental organisation whose scope is to "enhance regional cooperation, dialogue and implementation of concrete projects and initiatives" among all 28 countries of the European Union and 15 countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean.

Malta held the presidency of the Council of the European Union from January to June 30 of this year. "Malta plays a key role in the Union for the Mediterranean," said UfM Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi.

"It successfully put Euro-Mediterranean cooperation at the heart of the international agenda during the Maltese presidency of the Council of the EU," he said, adding that the UfM Secretariat is "committed to working closely with Malta with the aim of fostering regional dialogue and strengthening regional cooperation in the Mediterranean".

Coliero Preca talked about the newly implemented Mediterranean Tourism Forum, which is aimed at connecting public and private sector stakeholders in Mediterranean-region tourism.

Malta and the UfM are examining potential joint projects in line with the new UfM Roadmap for Action.

The Roadmap focuses on the economic importance of tourism as well as its potential for creating jobs and cultural understanding within countries in the Mediterranean region, and is backed by the foreign ministers of UfM member states. Malta hosted various UfM meetings during its presidency of the Council of the EU, including ministerial conferences on water and research and innovation, an informal high level meeting on energy efficiency in the Mediterranean, the BlueMed stakeholder conference, and the first UfM senior officials meeting of 2017.(ANSAmed).
