(ANSAmed) - Rome, September 12 - Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano spoke with the UN Special Representative to Libya, Ghassam Salame', on Tuesday, the foreign ministry has said in a statement. During the conversation the diplomats discussed the priorities for the political process leading to the stabilisation of Libya, in view of the ministerial meeting in London with the United Arab Emirates and Egypt and the meeting on Libya during the UN general assembly in New York. Alfano reportedly reiterated Italy's full commitment to ensuring the unity of Salame''s action, avoiding dispersion and maintaining unity within the international community in support of the negotiations underway. The minister also asked that the UNHCR and IOM become fully operational in Libya as quickly as possible to ensure the respect of migrants' rights. Salamé said agreement on the need to revise the national political accord is an important step forward on the road to elections and the appointment of new institutional leaders. There is also consensus on the need to move fast to avoid a power vacuum, he added. Furthermore, Salamé said he is fully aware of the importance of involving all relevant actors in the process. The UN representative also agreed on the need for the UNHCR to return to Libya quickly and said its offices are currently being made more secure in order for this to happen by October.

He then thanked Italy for its diplomatic action in Libya and New York to facilitate this process. Alfano expressed his appreciation for Salamé's work and said he hoped the UNSMIL mission and the entire UN system can return to Libya as soon as possible. (ANSAmed).
