'Catalan people will decide,' Spanish foreign minister says

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, NOVEMBER 14 - The government of Madrid has no option but to recognise the result of the elections on December 21, Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis has said in an interview with the Belgian daily Le Soir. "Unlike the referendum on October 1, which was illegal, in this case there are organisations that will check the regularity of the vote. This consultation is the only opportunity the pro-independence front has to see whether they still hold a majority within the Catalan population. We'll see how it goes. I prefer not to engage in speculation based on surveys," Spain's chief diplomat said. "We gave (deposed Catalan President Carles Puigdemont) several chances to avoid activation of article 155. He did not seize them. This is why we have called elections on December 21.

The Catalan people will decide. Puigdemont can decide whether to stand or not. It is up to him to decide whether he wants to go on living in this parallel reality," Dastis explains. (ANSAmed).
