Lebanese minister says forces working to 'undermine Lebanon'

After gas field contract with Russian companies falls through

17 November, 20:22

MOSCOW - Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil on Friday said he was on the verge of signing the "first contract for development of gas fields thanks to the participation of Russian companies" but it fell through due to "an attempt to block Lebanon in this path".

Bassil spoke prior to a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, according to Interfax news agency.

"The same forces that destabilised Syria are trying to undermine Lebanon," Bassil said.

"There's a campaign aimed at intimidating Lebanon and creating obstacles to its progress under various pretexts.

There's the desire to put certain forces connected to terrorism in our way," he said.

He said "some parties are trying to use certain forces to depose the Lebanese head of state" and therefore Beirut "at the present stage" is counting on "increased bilateral cooperation" with Russia, as well as "in the rebuilding of Syria".

Bassil said Lebanon expects Russia to increase its role in the Middle East in order to guarantee regional stability.

"We are aware of your enormous contribution to the fight against terrorism and your will to put out the fire of conflicts in various parts of the world," he said.

"We expect Russia to continue to increase its presence to complete the balance of powers in the region, otherwise (the region) won't survive," Bassil said.

Lavrov said Russia will "maintain its efforts to support Lebanon's sovreignty, unity, and territorial integrity", according to Interfax.

"The most important thing is that we push for the resolution of all urgent questions on the part of the Lebanese themselves, without external interference, through dialogue in a legal framework and taking into consideration the interests of all the main political forces," Lavrov said.
